Timoleon
The Ravaged Villa
In shards the sylvan vases lie,
Their links of dance undone;
And brambles wither by the brim,
Choked Fountain of the Sun!
The spider in the laurel spins,
The weed exiles the flower,
And, flung to kiln, Apollo's bust
Makes lime for Mammon's tower.
l. 7: Apollo. In Greek mythology, the god of, among other things, light and the sun, music, poetry and the arts.
l. 8: Mammon. In Christian imagery, a figure representing wealth or greed, from the Hebrew word for "money".
